Field reviews

Practical reviews, open methodology

Each review pairs the five scored criteria with a written verdict. Scores describe the portal as checked from Australia on the date shown, not the publisher’s reputation.

A short-session portal that gets a new account into a match faster than almost anything else on the list. The main reservation is depth: outside ranked play and training packs, there is little to explore between updates.

The launcher does a lot of work — patch notes, ranked history and champion data sit in one window — but the first fortnight is steep. Best suited to players who intend to stay for a season rather than an evening.

Still one of the clearest examples of a fully in-browser MMO. The panel-based layout shows its age and the currency systems take effort to read, but nothing needs to be installed to evaluate it.

The lowest-friction entry in the catalogue for mixed-skill groups. Round rotation is handled automatically, which is convenient but limits how much a player can shape a session.

Notes from the review desk

01

Browser tabs and launchers are not the same product

A portal that runs in a tab is judged on load behaviour and panel density; one that ships a launcher is judged on install size, update handling and how much account information the client surfaces before a match. Comparing them on a single 'ease of use' axis produces misleading results, so the catalogue separates the two formats.

02

Onboarding is measured to the first real session

We time from landing page to first playable action, counting every email confirmation, region selection and tutorial gate along the way. Portals that front-load account setup before showing any gameplay consistently score lower on access, even when the rest of the experience is well built.

03

Scores are revised, not archived

When a portal changes its access model or restructures its menus, the existing score is amended and the revision date printed on the entry. Historical scores are not kept as separate pages, because a rating that no longer describes the current portal is of little use to a reader.
